Course Substitutions and Waivers

Optional Methods for Meeting Course Requirements

  • Course substitution is permitted for core courses in which competency is demonstrated.
  • Students may petition a division, through a division chairperson, to substitute an elective for a core requirement and are required to demonstrate competence in the areas of study by passing a qualifying exam or documenting prior training and/or experience in negotiation with the course instructor and division chair.
  • In the case of qualifying exams, the examination is prepared and graded by the division involved; ordinarily a student is allowed only one opportunity to pass the exam.
  • Where competence is demonstrated, a notation indicating that the course requirement has been fulfilled is placed on the student's permanent record, and the student has the option of taking those credits in another areas of the curriculum.
  • IN NO CASE are credit hours given for the demonstration of competence.
