In October, Rev. Dr.Wanda Deifelt delivered “The Quotidian and the Mission of the Church: Saving Souls, Feeding Bodies, Healing Lives.” Her lecture was part of the annual Andrew S. Burgess Lectures in Global Mission series. Deifelt, a native of Brazil, is associate professor of religion at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Her lecture is available at www.luthersem.edu\/lectures\/burgess<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In November, Dr. Mark I.Wallace told the audience that the church is not only responsible for caring for the earth, but that care is the world’s only hope.<\/p>\n

“Science can analyze the record climate change since the industrial revolution,” Wallace said. “But science itself cannot provide the necessary moral foundation to answer the existential question, ‘What difference does it make whether our children or our grandchildren survive the killer weather that carbon dumping is destined to cause?'”<\/p>\n

Wallace presented “The New Green Christianity: Why the Church is Vital to Saving the Earth” at the annual Word & World lecture in November. Wallace is professor of religion and member of the Interpretation Theory Committee and the Environmental Studies Committee at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n

The Word & World lectures focus on topics important to Christian ministry in today’s world. The lectures are sponsored by Word & World, a scholarly theological journal published by Luther Seminary.<\/p>\n
