Sardis: Acropolis

The acropolis or upper city of Sardis was on a hill that towered above the valley floor. The sides of the acropolis were steep and the summit could be reached only by a path along a narrow ridge. This gave the city an almost impregnable stronghold. Most of the city was built on the valley floor below. The roads that followed the valleys were important for commerce and communication.
