The broad harbor alongside Smyrna was the mooring ground for ships that plied the Aegean Sea. In the heart of the city there was also a smaller harbor or marina that could be closed with a chain. Ships would transfer their cargo from the waterfront to the agora or market place, which was the commercial center of the city. Smyrna was known for its fine wine, garments, perfumes, and goldsmithing. |
