Student Information

What kind of Christian Public Leader student would be right for you:We would appreciate someone who is FAT; that is, Faithful, Available, and Teachable. We also feel having someone who does not need to have their hand held and is outgoing would be a good fit.
How many students have you worked with in the past:6 or more
How many rising students or seminarians do you work with currently:0
For this coming semester, what is the maximum number of students with whom you could work:2
What is the optimal length of learning for students working with you:4 semesters
Why would this length of time be best:While we are open to any length, due to the fact that so much of ministry is relational, for a leader to lead well, they need to be seen and heard and become someone who is known and can be trusted. This simply takes time.

Site Information

Site keywords:Multicultural work with school children & adults is ongoing. Neighborhood Outreach is key. Social Justice work thru ISAIAH, art shows, & uncommon conversations are fun and awesome!
What is your congregation or nonprofit organization all about:We are all about making Christ known. Our worship is traditional and we seek to follow where God is leading which is dynamic and ever new.
Please tell us a bit about your site:Hope has been a Lutheran congregation for over 90 years yet is doing many exciting things. Art Shows, an After School Program, a community garden, Town Hall meetings with Senators and other elected officials, a free lunch program and free ice cream on the street corner, two Montessori schools will be starting this fall in the building we lease, and more.
Please tell us what a student can learn at your site:If a student wants to learn in a welcoming, flexible, collaborative environment, this is the place where that can happen. Hope is a great place to learn how traditional churches tend to work as well as how revitalization occurs. Our Sunday morning people are few but very committed and open to learning. We will be partnering with a Hmong speaking congregation this fall in addition to all of the outreach opportunities I mentioned above.

Mentor Information: Jonathan Zielske

Current position:Pastor
Please tell us a little bit about yourself as a Christian public leader:I grew up as a pastor's kid in a moderate Missouri Synod congregation and went to the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago. I love to serve Jesus Christ and the Church and my favorite Bible verse is John 10:10, "I have come that they may have life and have it abundantly." A second is from Isaiah 58, "You shall be called the repairer of the breach, a restorer of streets to live in." I have served two SPAS congregations prior to coming to Hope and I have now been here 12 years. I still have great energy and enthusiasm for where God is leading me and the people of Hope and love working with students who want to engage in this work alongside me.
Please tell us a little bit about yourself as a mentor of students:I am a collaborator and believe that I am easy to get along with. I prefer students who are ready to lead and bring their own gifts and ideas into the mix but are also open to being team players. I expect accountability in our shared work and believe that for someone to lead, they need to be in deep relationships with those whom they are seeking to lead.
