Site Information

Site keywords:*new mission start *emergent ministry *ministry of presence *"third place" *social justice *ministry in a coffee house
What is your congregation or nonprofit organization all about:We are a non-profit coffee house and fair trade market (2 locations) that seek to "bridge" people both locally and globally, making connections with faith and daily life.
Please tell us a bit about your site:We are located in New Town - an intentional new urbanism community. We are the only coffee house that serves this 1800 living unit community. I liken it to a "Millenium Mayberry!" We were started by 4 area churches and housed a Fair Trade Market in a small kiosk in 2008. In 2009 we opened a coffee house to provide the opportunity to develop relationships with people and provide a place of gathering. While we still operate with funding by some of these churches, we are our own mission under development, calling a full time mission developer/pastor in 2013. We "do church differently" reaching out to those who would not normally find themselves in the four walls of the traditional church.
Please tell us what a student can learn at your site:*ministry of presence
*How to engage in conversation/relationship with others who aren't Christian, or who have walked away from the church for whatever reason
*Gift of hospitality
*Creativity in "doing church differently"
*Exploring the use of the means of grace in a setting that is atypical and does not represent the traditional church at all or those in it, but does offer the sacraments
*Explore being involved in ministry with one of our full communion partners
*Learn about Fair Trade and the social justice issues that go along with that
*Learn how to be a barista!

Mentor Information: Elizabeth (Libbie) Reinking

Current position:Pastor, Mission Developer
Please tell us a little bit about yourself as a Christian public leader:I am a 2013 MDiv Luther Grad after serving as a Diaconal Minister for 12 years. I spent my last year of seminary training in a culminating internship @ The Bridge. I was the first fulltime mission developer of this site, although there was another part time MD certified in both the RCA and the ELCA that served this ministry before me. After graduating, I was called to remain at The Bridge in a full time capacity. We are in the throws of trying to move into a new and larger space in the same neighborhood, expanding our ministry goals! I am constantly looking for God's activity in the worldthrough this ministry. So much of this ministry is about relationship building, being tolerant of others views and backgrounds and being willing to step outside the box and trust that the Spirit will intervene and lead the way.
Please tell us a little bit about yourself as a mentor of students:I'm still wrapping my head around this new language "Christian public leadership" even though I only left seminary a couple of years ago! For me, its a challenge to be a Christian in the world, especially in a ministry that encounters the world coming through its very public doors. So CPL might mean for me a way to be comfortable in your collar (though invisible) in the world that is probably not looking for it but welcomes it when it comes in authentic and life giving ways. RE supervision - I like team work - respecting each others gifts and working together. So I lead and mentor by bringing others in to the conversation to discuss and discern the task at hand and coming to a mutual decision.
