Verse 13Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. Verse 14John would have prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" Verse 15But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness." Then he consented. Verse 16And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. Verse 17And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased."
Devotion
When my car caught fire, I pulled over on the highway. It was a Sunday afternoon in the middle of July. Several cars drove by. Many looked over at my car now fully ablaze, their heads shaking. I walked to the next town a few miles away. No cars were parked along their main street—or anywhere else. The local garage was closed, as were the gas station, grocery store, a bowling alley, and a small hotel whose sign flickered “No Vacancy.” A car pulled up. “Are you lost?” the driver asked. I explained the situation. They nodded and said they heard about me on the local scanner. They asked if they could drive me wherever I needed to go. When I said I had a test the next day, they told me to hop in. A day I thought God had forsaken me became a day in which God was present.
Prayer
Show up, O Lord, in those places and times you promise to be present. Open wide our hearts and lives to be surprised by your grace. Amen.
