Devotion
Psalm 121, a printed copy of which I received at my father’s gravesite, carried me through the darkest days of my life. Each morning, before leaving for work, I would read aloud its assuring words, reminding me that I was not alone and my life was in God’s protection. Years later, I continue to pray its words, bringing different circumstances to every reading, realizing that the lens through which we read a psalm changes dramatically with the challenges we face and as the number of our days increases. God’s promises available to us never change and our burden is shared, the load is lightened with the loving protection of God’s presence. The psalmist asks and answers the question, “From where will my help come?” The answer is based on the psalmist’s faith and experience and trust, which is the result of those experiences. God has delivered us in the past, is present with us in this time, and all the time to come.
Prayer
Gracious and present God, I look to you in days of darkness and in light, trusting that you who have made heaven and earth will keep my going out and coming in, today, and through all the days of my life. Amen.
