Andrew Root joined Luther Seminary in 2005. He is often mentioned as one of the leading scholars in pastoral theology, youth ministry, and practical theology in the world. He is the author of the acclaimed six volume series, Ministry in a Secular Age series, (The Church in the Age of Secular Mysticisms, Church After Innovation, Churches and the Crisis of Decline, The Congregation in a Secular Age, The Pastor in a Secular Age, and Faith Formation in a Secular Age). His most recent works include Baal and the Gods of More and Evangelism in an Age of Despair. Root research and teaching also has focused on the work of Dietrich Bonhoeffer—with two unique and novel reads of 20th century thinkers. Overall Root has written over thirty books.

Root has also procured and overseen almost 9 million dollars in grant funds from funders like the Lilly Endowment and Templeton Foundation.
