Luther Seminary will host the traveling exhibit “Exploring Human Origins: What Does It Mean to Be Human?” after the seminary was selected through a national competition offered by the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and the American Library Association.
“We are thrilled that Luther Seminary has been selected to host this unique and fascinating exhibit,” said President Robin Steinke. “Our students, alumni, and church partners are deeply engaged with what it means to lead faith communities in a science-driven world. This exhibit will help all of us consider complex questions of faith and science in a thoughtful, rigorous way.”
Through panels, interactive kiosks, hands-on displays, and videos, the exhibit invites viewers to learn about the milestones in the evolutionary journey of becoming human. In addition, scientists and other experts from the Smithsonian’s Human Origins Program will visit Luther Seminary to host events for the community, including a public science program, educator workshop, clergy tour, and more.
The traveling exhibit encourages a public conversation that focuses on multiple perspectives of what it means to be human—one that embraces the ideas and beliefs of non-scientists and fosters greater appreciation of the complexity of the science of human evolution.
This free, public exhibit will open at Luther Seminary on August 15 and close on November 16, 2025.
