Verse 11On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee. Verse 12As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their distance, Verse 13they called out, saying, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!" Verse 14When he saw them, he said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went, they were made clean. Verse 15Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. Verse 16He prostrated himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan. Verse 17Then Jesus asked, "Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? Verse 18Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" Verse 19Then he said to him, "Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well."
Devotion
Years ago, when I was a poor preacher with a young family living below the taxable wage, worrying about where we would live in year-to-year rentals, people said with conviction that I was a poor preacher of the good news. They said: “Go to church and hear it for yourself!” I asked for mercy and occasionally prayed and bought a lottery ticket hoping for a little luck, when Grace (as always) abounded beyond my clouded vision. Well! Thankfully, I gave up the lotto foolishness and continued to pray for mercy in the form of daily bread, not a windfall. My father-in-law, a righteous reformer, who openly recognized the burden of the pastoral vocation, gave us a wedding gift of a pup tent, saying, “There! you’ll never be homeless!” He was right! A home in heaven is far more secure than a year-by-year rental. Like the Samaritan, my family and I turned to Christ Jesus for daily bread, rarely went hungry, and never were homeless.
Prayer
Jesus, your grace through the Holy Spirit is generous beyond our imagination! Give us the vision and the energy to work that we may receive enough goodness for yet one more day. Amen.
