“Are you the one who is to come or are we to wait for another?” (Matthew 11:3)
I have been thinking a lot about John the Baptist in the midst of these days of Advent. His question in Matthew, “Are you the one who is to come or are we to wait for another?” reminds me that if John the Baptist can have second thoughts about who Jesus is, then perhaps it is okay for the rest of us to entrust to God our questions, wonder and worry about what God is up to in the world.
The bigger the decisions we have prompt bigger doubts. John the Baptist is a reminder for me that we can entrust our doubts, wonder and worry to the one who has the power of the future, the one who meets us in our context and circumstances and who brings hope, promise, healing and renewal where we are most in need and sometimes in ways we least expect.
Come join us in community in January for wondering and renewing time together at the Martin Luther King Jr. event and at Mid-Winter Convocation; hear what our faculty colleagues have been thinking about, especially Karoline Lewis, associate professor of biblical preaching, as she shares wisdom from her new book “SHE: Teaching, Preaching and Living the Five Keys;” or register for a Lay School course to learn more about matters that relate to Christian faith and life.
What are you wondering about in this season of Advent? I pray that the promise of the coming Christ renews your weariness, deepens your faith, strengthens your love of family and foreigner, and awakens arenas where you may bear faithful witness to Christ.
