LBW #315, "Love Divine, All Loves Excelling"
Devotion
Love songs are always popular. Love songs have been around since the beginning of time, and we continue to want more movies, books and songs about love. Even those with no religious faith trust the power and worth of love.
Love deserves its reputation for making the world go round. Love keeps going and going and going, but love does not originate in the human heart. Love is a gift of God, and divine love exceeds all human love. Love comes from God and we are the containers and pipelines of that love.
Charles Wesley, one of the greatest hymn writers of all time, defined Jesus as “Love divine, all loves excelling – Joy of heav’n, to earth come down.” Wesley’s love song is very clear about the source of all love and the incredible depth of God’s love.
Prayer
O God of love, “fix in us thy humble dwelling . . . until in heaven we take our place – Till we cast our crowns before thee – Lost in wonder, love and praise.”
