LBW #499, “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing”
Devotion
A prayer in the service for Holy Baptism (LBW) declares: “By the gift of water you nourish and sustain us and all living things.”
When I lived in the semi-arid country of southeastern Arizona, I recall a river that was habitat and sanctuary for many land animals, fish and birds. Survival of most species depended on vegetation and habitat which sprung from the San Pedro River.
The sound of a stream or babbling brook is a soothing life-affirming sound. I’ve been in homes that have a small indoor fountain on a desk or coffee table. Some churches have a baptismal font in the entrance to the sanctuary that continually pumps water.
Prayer
“Come, thou fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace; Streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise. While the hope of endless glory fills my heart with joy and love, teach me ever to adore thee; May I still thy goodness prove.” Amen.
