Verse 9for we are but of yesterday, and we know nothing, for our days on earth are but a shadow.
Devotion
The older we get the more we can identify with these words from Job 8, words spoken to Job by one of his supposed friends. The tendency of the young is to think that this generation knows it all. We forget the great wisdom and brilliant minds of the past. There is an important lesson in humility as we are reminded that our generation is not the zenith of all time. Our days on earth are indeed but a shadow. Humbled by that awareness, we can look back to draw on the wisdom and faith of those who have gone before us even as we pray that God will enable us to leave such a legacy.
Prayer
Lord God, you know all things. Forgive our arrogance of knowledge. Keep us humble and grateful for all the wisdom of the past. Help us learn especially of you from the generations before us, so that we may bless those who follow us. Amen.
