Verse 5This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. Verse 6If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true; Verse 7but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
Devotion
I recently heard someone talk about his experience of being in a cave. He turned out his light and was unable to see anything at all—not even his hand just inches from his eyes. Sin can be like sitting in a cave. Enclosed by our own selfish desires, we cannot see outside of ourselves. Focused on our own needs, we are blind to the needs of others. Being able to focus on Christ, as the healer of blindness, allows us to release our guilt and shame and turn outward again to see what is happening in front of our own faces.
Prayer
God of healing and light, lead us out of the caves of sin and selfishness. Turn a light on in our darkness and help us to see the needs of those around us. Give us a passion for your justice. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen.
