WOV 771, “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”
Devotion
One of my favorite hymns is this one written by Thomas Obadiah Chisholm in 1923. He said that there was no particular instance that prompted him to write this now-classic hymn of the 20th century. It was only the witness of the Bible to a faithful God.
I have associated this hymn with all those great saints gone before me who, like Chisholm, had a rock-solid faith in God to carry them through difficult times. This was one reason why I chose to sing this hymn at my grandmother’s funeral several years ago. She and my grandfather had their share of trials, not the least of which was losing their eldest son in a car accident at the age of 18. Yet, they knew that a God who loved us so much to send a Son to die for us would be faithful to them even in the face of their suffering.
Prayer
Great is your faithfulness, O God. We thank you for your unfailing love. Amen.
