God Be In My Head
God be in my head, and in my understanding;
God be in mine eyes, and in my looking;
God be in my mouth, and in my speaking;
God be in my heart, and in my thinking;
God be at mine end, and at my departing.
Devotion
For nine months out of the year I sing with the Minnesota Compline Choir. We chant the liturgy of compline each Sunday night for a gathered congregation and radio audience. This past year we sang a choral arrangement of "God Be In My Head." It dawned on me that compline is not only prayer at the close of this day but a prayer for the beginning of the next. When I rest my head in sleep, God is beginning to create and heal me through dreams and surrender. At death we experience the profound grace of God as we give up control and God carries us fully.
Prayer
God be in my head, and in my understanding;
God be in mine eyes, and in my looking;
God be in my mouth, and in my speaking;
God be in my heart, and in my thinking;
God be at mine end, and at my departing.
Amen.
