Devotion

A flashback caught me by surprise recently while waiting for co-workers in front of the doors leading to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Because this was not the hospital I normally work at, I had only seen these same doors one other time. It was almost twenty years ago after my father was hospitalized for a heart attack. Back then, I did not know the culture that comes from working in an ICU. I remember instinct being my guide and not reading signs, not checking in at the information desk, and not talking to a nurse before entering my father’s room. My visceral compulsion was to touch him, be recognized in his eyes, and know he was alive. I wanted to draw near to him and lead only by my heart. When in moments of suffering or joy, know that in drawing near to God, God has already drawn near to you.
