Chapter 4Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness,
Devotion
“Jesus was led by the Spirit in the wilderness.” Light cannot enter a closed room. A cup that is already full cannot be filled. A lute that is not hollow cannot resound with music. Lent begins with confession and forgiveness so that we may create an empty space where new life, new purpose and new wonder can grow. And so we let go. In confession we let go of the burden of failure and wrong-doing. We let go of our brokenness. We enter the wilderness where we can see clearly because there is little to distract. In forgiveness we empty ourselves of bitterness toward ourselves and others, of humiliation and regret. We enter the wilderness where God has promised, “I will be there howsoever I will be there”. These are days rich with promise and potential. Emptied of all that would hinder us, we turn and walk toward newness.
Prayer
As your Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness, O God, so lead us away from all that would distract us from your purpose. Amen.
