Verse 38Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Verse 39She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to what he was saying. Verse 40But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me." Verse 41But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; Verse 42there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her."
Devotion
Our church is often like the family that Jesus visits in today’s gospel. Some are like Lazarus and seem dead. Some are like Mary and use the gift of listening in faith to grow closer to Jesus. Adult education and small groups are more important to the growth of the church than Sunday School! If parents set a good example for their children by attending adult programming and participating in small groups at the church, perhaps their children will be more likely to maintain their faith. Looking back over the past five years, how have you grown in your discipleship? Mary knew enough to sit at the feet of Jesus and learn, and so should we. Use your gift of learning to grow as a disciple of Jesus ... perhaps by spending the summer months reading the New Testament from beginning to end.
Prayer
Dear teacher, help us to grow in our understanding of who you are and who you want us to be. Amen
