Genesis 1:1-2:4 (NRSV)
Devotion
In creation, chaos is transformed through the Words and Breath of God. Genesis 1 speaks of a "wind from God" that swept over the face of the waters. Darkness is turned to light. Emptiness is filled with life. Isolation is transformed into community. Acts 2 begins with a similar sense of chaos as a "sound like the rush of a violent wind" from heaven sweeps through the room (Acts 2:1). In that chaos the Holy Spirit is once again at work to create: filling the darkness…filling the emptiness…creating community. Strengthened and filled by the Holy Spirit, then, we proclaim the Word of God into darkness, and there is light. Strengthened and filled by the Holy Spirit, we proclaim the Word of God into emptiness, and there is life. Strengthened and filled by the Holy Spirit, we proclaim the Word of God into isolation, and there is community.
Prayer
God, fill us with your Holy Spirit anew this day, that our very breath be a testimony to your presence and ongoing creation in our lives. Amen.
