“This Little Light of Mine” (ELW 677)
1 This little light of mine, I’m goin’-a let it shine;
this little light of mine, I’m goin’-a let it shine;
this little light of mine, I’m goin’-a let it shine,
let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
2 Everywhere I go, I’m goin’-a let it shine;
everywhere I go, I’m goin’-a let it shine;
everywhere I go, I’m goin’-a let it shine,
let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
3 Jesus gave it to me, I’m goin’-a let it shine;
Jesus gave it to me, I’m goin’-a let it shine;
Jesus gave it to me, I’m goin’-a let it shine,
let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
Devotion
The season of Epiphany concludes. However, the image of Christ, the light revealed to the world, never fades. The shining mountaintop images of God giving Moses the law and of Christ transfigured endure.
These images of light are ours to share. What images will we share to shine Christ’s light throughout the world? Will we share clouded and unclear images of God, or will they be blazing and bright? Will we only share images of a powerfully punishing king, or will we emphasize God’s comforting refuge? Will we share myths or truth? Will we share only Christ’s human image, or will we include his divine image as God’s beloved Son? How will we let our lights shine in both words and service?
The season of Epiphany ends. However, Jesus’ call for us continues: to let our light shine and so glorify our Father in heaven. May our light from Jesus shine everywhere we go! Let it shine!
Prayer
God of each person and of all the world, thank you for sending your beloved Son to be our light. Empower us to let the light Jesus gave us shine everywhere we go! Amen.
