Verse 1The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
Verse 2He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters;
Verse 3he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name's sake.
Verse 4Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff- they comfort me.
Verse 5You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Verse 6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long.
Devotion
This is one of the most beloved psalms and a portion of scripture recognized even by those who have little other connection with the Bible. It is frequently used in funerals because of verse four, but it is really a psalm for life’s journey. God is described as a shepherd who supplies our deepest needs, who walks with us in times of peace and security but also at times when we fear the most frightening aspects of life. To have our inmost being restored and guided in ways of living that reflect the care of our Shepherd is surely a gift for every life. As we are pursued by God’s goodness and mercy, we find ourselves returning regularly to houses of worship where we find strengthening in faith, comfort in our sorrows, peace in the midst of turmoil, and the assurance that this Shepherd is with us all the days of our lives.
Prayer
Good Shepherd, grant us the peace that you alone can give in the midst of conflict, worry, and doubt. Guide us with your Spirit along paths that are sure and safe. Grant us your blessing that we might be a blessing to others. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
