Chapter 2First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, Verse 2for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. Verse 3This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, Verse 4who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. Verse 5For there is one God; there is also one mediator between God and humankind, Christ Jesus, himself human, Verse 6who gave himself a ransom for all-this was attested at the right time. Verse 7For this I was appointed a herald and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.
Devotion
Prayer has the capacity to reshape our hearts and the world around us, especially when we intercede for those whom we find difficult to love or respect. Addressed to Timothy who had been close to the Apostle Paul, the author encourages believers to make praying for everyone, especially those in authority, a priority. Likely written toward the end of the first century when persecution of Christians was prominent, this command would have been daunting. The author states, prayers should not be based on the worthiness of the leader, but on God’s desire for peace, justice, and the salvation of all people.
What if instead of complaining or gossiping about someone, you turned to God in prayer for them? And maybe, you are the person that someone sees as needing prayers. Through prayer, we affirm our common need for a Savior, who bridges the divide between us and God. This week, when someone frustrates you, pause and offer a prayer for their well-being rather than venting about them to others.
Prayer
Merciful God, help us to pray for those we love and those we find difficult to love or respect. Help us to see that when we pray on behalf of others, we become vessels of Christ’s reconciling love. May our prayers transform our attitudes, deepen our humility, and align us ever more closely with God’s heart for all people. Amen.
