LBW #486, "Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart"
Devotion
“...through all its pulses move.” What an evocative phrase! What would it mean for God’s Spirit to truly live and move in all our pulses of life. Pulses. Pulses pump the lifeblood throughout our bodies. Pulses. Regular pulses, rhythms of life, even when I do not pay attention or am asleep.
What does it mean for God’s Spirit to move through the pulses of our congregations, through the pulses of this world? Pulses. Pulsating lifeblood flowing through the whole body of Christ. What is that like? By God’s grace we are part of the body of Christ, and the pulses go on, even when we do not pay attention or are asleep.
When a child is tended, a wound healed, a stranger welcomed, a heart mended, an anger quelled, a rift reconciled, a lost one found, a privilege surrendered, or an enemy loved — this is this the pulsing of the Spirit.
Prayer
Spirit of God, descend upon our hearts and our lives. Move through the pulses of our lives. Let us live in the lifeblood that flows in this world through the body of Christ. Amen.
