LBW #537, “O Jesus, King Most Wonderful”
Devotion
I can see in my mind a lonely campsite I once occupied, pitched along the shore of a wilderness lake. The night is black; the new moon sheds no light. In the darkness the sounds of the night are terrifying, conjuring up the very real possibility of a meeting with a bear. Mosquitoes and bugs swarm round my head, irritating and biting. Simply walking in the blackness of the woods brings the danger of tripping on fallen branches, stepping into holes, or walking over an embankment.
But it all changes with the bright light of a lantern hung in a tree branch. The campsite is brilliantly alight; the fear of the dark driven back. Safety, comfort and security are in the light.
Jesus is the light of my life; the light of the world. He is the fount of light and fire. In his light there is freedom and joy, peace and love.
Prayer
Thank you, Jesus, for being the light of the world. Shine your light on my path, so that I might walk in your will and your way. Amen.
