LBW #439, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”
Devotion
My unofficial count suggests that “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” is the most frequent hymn chosen for funerals. And when we vote for the congregation’s “favorite hymn,” this one often shows up in first or second place.
I marvel that in the face of incredible grief, the painful emptiness death leaves on a family and the end of familiar and wonderful things of life, a family still has the faith and the presence of mind to think of this hymn as one to speak comfort and blessing. This hymn declares their faith in the blessings of God in Christ. And they are right. When we are down and out, we are most open to God’s blessings. When we have problems, troubles and worries, then we’ll know and see most clearly the blessings of God. “In his arms he’ll take and shield us; you will find a solace there.” (v.3)
Prayer
Jesus, my good friend: keep me always in your care and help me to take all things to you in prayer. Remind me that I must be empty to be filled. Remind me that when I’m down and out, I can most clearly see the blessings of our Father. Bring me the solace of your grace. Amen.
