WOV #776, “Be Thou My Vision”
Devotion
“This is our vision of our preferred future,” summarized the chairperson in the nicely prepared vision and planning report. His words, however, left me wondering, “Is our vision of our preferred future also God’s vision?”
Today’s hymn speaks of the true wisdom, source and inspiration of our vision. Visions without Jesus at the center or that neglect God’s preferred vision are not of the kingdom.
God’s vision often stands our visions on their ear. The vision of the kingdom painted this week is: to “do justice, love kindness and to walk humbly with God” (Micah 6:8b); to “lead a blameless life and do what is right” (Psalm 15:2a); to consider God’s wisdom and strength (I Corinthians 1:18-21); and to know God’s blessings when I’m down and out (the Beatitudes).
In the end, in spite of my efforts, successes or failures, I’m blessed in the reign of God; blessed because “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.”
Prayer
Jesus, lover of my soul: thank you for the witness of those who taught me the simple song of the Gospel. Thank you for the years of life with which I’ve been gifted. Let me sing for joy your love for the entire world. Let me sing songs of love and praise. Amen.
