Verse 11And every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. Verse 12But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, "he sat down at the right hand of God," Verse 13and since then has been waiting "until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet." Verse 14For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.
Devotion
Inscribed on Dietrich Bonhoeffer's makeshift prison altar-table was the Greek word 'eph'hapax' meaning "once-for-all." It testifies that Christ's death on the cross was a sacrifice made "once-for-all," and that "all" includes you, me, and the whole world. We have received the bounties of Christ's sacrifice on the cross. We did not ask for it—we received it as a gift. Done. Finished. This is good news for us today as we walk through the ups and the downs of daily living and especially in the moments that tempt us to question God’s faithfulness.
God is indeed faithful through Christ's death and resurrection. In the cross and empty tomb, we can place all our trust, knowing that, no matter what, we are saved by the One who is indeed the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
Prayer
Redeeming God, in the moments of life that challenge me, remind me of your grace and promise that Jesus' death was indeed once-for-all, for me and for the world. Strengthen me in all that I do to live in your grace, knowing that in life and in death you redeem and call me to be your presence each and every day. Amen.
