In this week's gospel reading from Luke 5, Jesus calls us to "catch people"—that is, to seek out relationship with people and invite them into the community we share in Christ. I love how the hymn "You Have Come Down to the Lakeshore" plays with this metaphor of fishing. The chorus invites us to respond to God's call and "seek other seas." It's often easy for us to be in relationship with people we know—friends and family, neighbors across the street, people who share our values. But this hymn reminds us that the call to "catch people" draws us out of ourselves and into the unknown—perhaps to listen to someone who does not share our political views or to accompany a friend who is wrestling with questions of faith. What "other seas" is God calling you to explore? How will you respond?
Prayer
Almighty God, guide us as we venture into "other seas" to share your love, ever mindful that you are with us always. Amen.
