This Little Light of Mine (ELW 677)
Devotion
1 This little light of mine, I'm goin'-a let it shine;
this little light of mine, I'm goin'-a let it shine;
this little light of mine, I'm goin'-a let it shine,
let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
2 Ev'rywhere I go, I'm goin'-a let it shine;
ev'rywhere I go, I'm goin'-a let it shine;
ev'rywhere I go, I'm goin'-a let it shine,
let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
3 Jesus gave it to me, I'm goin'-a let it shine;
Jesus gave it to me, I'm goin'-a let it shine;
Jesus gave it to me, I'm goin'-a let it shine,
let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
Text: African American spiritual
What do we do with the gift of Christ's light? We don't hide it or hoard it. We share it. We spread it. We let it shine. Various versions and musical arrangements of the African American spiritual "This Little Light of Mine" do just that. It has been sung and continues to be sung by countless children of all ages who shine Christ's light in their own way in their own place and time.
Jesus calls his followers the light of the world (Matthew 5:14). That includes you! So sing your song and shine your light so hope and joy radiate and the love of God is made known everywhere you go.
Prayer
Giver of light, thank you for love. Help us to share it and shine it with everyone we meet, everywhere we go. Amen.
