Eternal Father Strong to Save (ELW 756, Verses 1 and 2)
1 Eternal Father, strong to save,
whose arm has bound the restless wave,
who bade the mighty ocean deep
its own appointed limits keep:
oh, hear us when we cry to thee
for those in peril on the sea.
2 O Savior, whose almighty word
the winds and waves submissive heard,
who walked upon the foaming deep,
and calm amid the storm didst sleep:
oh, hear us when we cry to thee
for those in peril on the sea.
Devotion
Two things about this hymn: One is how perfectly it reprises this week’s themes; and second, is its powerful personal meaning. Upon my return from the sailing trip I learned that every Sunday I was gone the congregation I served had prayed for our safety and sung this hymn. Remembering Psalm. 107, we were indeed brought to “our desired haven” in awe of “God’s wonderful works.” How remarkable it is to be held and prayed for by a congregation of beloved friends.
We continue to cry out to God for one another, not only for those in peril on the sea but those in peril wherever they are. And we at times feel the need to cry out to a seemingly absent Jesus “Save them.” But Jesus promises that is why he is in the boat with us and why he’s given us the skills and resources to do what the world cries out for.
Prayer
As we cry to you for help in whatever threatening circumstance, Lord, remind us of the gifts you have given us to respond to the world’s needs and give us the will and tenacity to use them for those in peril. Amen.
