There Is a Balm in Gilead (ELW 614)
Refrain:
There is a balm in Gilead
to make the wounded whole;
there is a balm in Gilead
to heal the sin-sick soul.
1 Sometimes I feel discouraged
and think my work’s in vain,
but then the Holy Spirit
revives my soul again. [Refrain]
2 If you cannot preach like Peter,
if you cannot pray like Paul,
you can tell the love of Jesus
and say, “He died for all.” [Refrain]
3 Don’t ever be discouraged,
for Jesus is your friend;
and if you lack for knowledge,
he’ll not refuse to lend. [Refrain]
Devotion
Throughout this week our readings have invited us to journey to some of the most profound places of brokenness—broken visions, broken hearts, broken bodies, and broken relationships. We have discovered our God again in creation, in the prophets, in the psalmists, and through his Son. We have been reminded of a balm for our sickness of mind, body, and soul through the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. How amazing grace is, that we cannot out sin His love for us.
She called, and we talked about her deep loneliness and open wounds in her soul. Now she calls me to talk about a balm of hope through Jesus Christ and to hear the God’s words of forgiving love. She wants a miracle, the courage to get out of her boat, and then travel to her Gilead where others might assist her in receiving the heavenly balm. I believe that day will come. Glory be to God.
Prayer
Beautiful Savior forgive our sins and lead us to the places and people where we can find the balm needed for the healing of our soul. The journey is lengthy, we know, but thank you for walking with us and carrying us upon your shoulders. Amen.
