When the Well Runs Dry (by Margaret Ann Sander, 2021)
You bid me, come and drink, but the well has run dry
You say, come and rest, you’ll wipe the tears from my eye
But how can I trust you when the worlds closing in?
All I can see, is darkness and sin.
I am thirsty Lord, help me survive,
With your life giving water I thrive
You give me grace and hope and strength from above
You give me all that I need, wrapped up in your love.
I know you are there, but it seems like you’re not
I give what I can, this is all that I’ve got
I am thirsty Lord, help me survive,
With your life giving water I thrive
I give you thanks and praise for the gift of your grace.
And I long for the day to see you face to face
I’ll cling to the promise that you make us whole
And to serve…others, refreshes my soul
I can see now that YOU quench my thirst
And I’ll thrive best by putting YOU first.
Devotion
I wrote this song as I thought about going through the pandemic and what we needed to not only survive, but to thrive. What do we need to live life to the fullest? How can we trust in God’s promises and find JOY every day? My heart was breaking with all that was going on in the world and I was exhausted from trying to provide care and communicate with others—communication that listens to understand and not to respond.
My mom’s voice rang in my ear, “Just because I don’t agree with you, doesn’t mean I don’t understand you.” I immediately thought, “If you understood me you would agree with me, because I’m right.” I often found myself frustrated that as I concentrated on trying to understand, people didn’t care to hear what I had to say anyway. That’s when the spirit helped me realize that I needed to surround myself with people who fill me up and fill my cup.
Prayer
Awesome God, fill us to overflowing with your life-giving water as we seek to serve you and our neighbor with joy. Amen.
