Open My Eyes, That I May See (United Methodist Hymnal 454)
1 Open my eyes that I may see
glimpses of truth thou hast for me.
Place in my hands the wonderful key
that shall unclasp and set me free.
Silently now I wait for thee,
ready, my God, thy will to see.
Open my eyes, illumine me,
Spirit divine!
2 Open my ears that I may hear
voices of truth thou sendest clear,
and while the wave notes fall on my ear,
ev’rything false will disappear.
Silently now I wait for thee,
ready, my God, thy will to see.
Open my ears, illumine me,
Spirit divine!
3 Open my mouth and let me bear
gladly the warm truth ev’rywhere.
Open my heart and let me prepare
love with thy children thus to share.
Silently now I wait for thee,
ready, my God, thy will to see.
Open my mouth, illumine me,
Spirit divine!
Devotion
There is so much about life that is beautiful. Yesterday morning I had the joy of watching birds bathe in the birdbath. There were two cardinals, later a robin, and then a blue jay. Each one different, each one singing a special song, each one created by God. Late yesterday afternoon, just before the rain came, I looked out back and there were two bucks standing by the apple tree enjoying dinner. One was an eight-point buck and the other a six-point buck, both in velvet. I thought of God’s creation; it was like having a glimpse of the Garden of Eden right in my backyard. It was a reminder that this world is not my home. This is only a shadow of what is to come. There is a glorious future in God’s kingdom. But the truth is I do not have to wait for that kingdom; by God’s promise in the Resurrection, I can begin living in that future already today. “Open my eyes that I may see.”
Prayer
It is not how many days I live, O God, but how I live out those days here and now. Amen.
