Wisdom of Solomon 1:13-15, 2:23-24
1:13 God did not make death, and he does not delight in the death of the living.
1:14 For he created all things so that they might exist; the generative forces of the world are wholesome, and there is no destructive poison in them, and the dominion of Hades is not on earth.
1:15 For righteousness is immortal.
2:23 For God created us for incorruption, and made us in the image of his own eternity,
2:24 but through the devil’s envy death entered the world, and those who belong to his company experience it.
Devotion
When faced with death, we often comfort ourselves with the assurance that it is God’s will. But in fact, death is not God’s will for us. God created us for life. Yet death undeniably looms large in our experience. The cold finger of death draws the boundary of our time on this earth and gives shape to all of our lives. The specter of death shows our need for redemption. In Christ, God has entered into our death, even to the point of giving himself up to death on the cross. By dying, the Lord of Life has become the death of death, and through the resurrection, God will finally fulfill the promise to “make us in the image of God’s own eternity.”
Prayer
Living Savior, we rejoice in your eternal victory over death. Keep us from despairing in times of grief, and comfort us with the hope of resurrection. Amen.
