Verse 12"I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. Verse 13When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. Verse 14He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. Verse 15All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
Devotion
If you haven’t been asked, “Are you born again?” your time will come. My response goes back to Martin Luther’s teaching on the Sacrament of Holy Baptism in his Small Catechism: “Every day, I am born again.” Luther makes it clear that our baptism is the beginning of a lifelong journey that happens one day at a time. Daily, our sins and evil desires need to be drowned and die, so that a new person can come forth. I love to experience the new life of the resurrection, but the catch is, before you can be resurrected you first have to die. You can’t have the glory, unless you go through the gory. This is the language of relationship of faith—there is always more to learn and more to come. But the good news comes in verse 13: the Holy Spirit will guide us. Trust and obey, there’s no other way.
Prayer
O God, thank you that you came in Jesus. You came at Pentecost, and you keep coming in your Spirit. May that be the truth that we live by, every day. Amen.
