Verse 42They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Verse 43Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. Verse 44All who believed were together and had all things in common; Verse 45they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Verse 46Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, Verse 47praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.
Devotion
On the day of Pentecost, Peter preaches a sermon that has such a powerful impact on the people that they ask, “What should we do?” His response causes a large group to turn to the good news of the gospel and be baptized in the name of Jesus. They then begin to live out their newness of life in ways that seek to learn, strengthen the community, care for those in need, and welcome new members. This is the life of the community of faith.
As individuals who are baptized and gifted by the Holy Spirit, we find strength and regular renewal as we gather with others in worship, praising God, sharing generously, and offering intercessory prayers. Upon leaving, we continue to share this powerful good news in welcoming ways that reflect the Good Shepherd who is our guide.
Prayer
Gracious God, as your Holy Spirit empowers us to respond to your gospel, lead us in lives that share your love and grace with a world desperately in need of a word of hope. Sustain us with the gift of your Spirit and shepherd us in all we do and say. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
