WOV #790, "Praise to You, O God of Mercy"
Devotion
Praise to You, O God of Mercy is based on Psalm 113, the Psalm for Sunday. Marty Haugen first wrote this to be used as the post-communion hymn in his Communion Liturgy, Now the Feast and Celebration. It is a hymn that reminds us that God first sought us out in our own poverty and need.
Haugen repeats the first verse as the third verse as a form of emphasis: “God has raised high the weak and lowly,” so that we, too, must do the same in his name. Having raised us by the power of his grace in Christ Jesus, the second verse says, “God has also taught us truth and justice.” This hymn also reflects Amos’ admonishing words from the Old Testament lesson, and Jesus’ call for us to be faithful in the “little” that God asks of us.
Prayer
Praise to you, O God of mercy! Thanks be to you forever! We thank you that you have remembered your covenant of life with us. Help us to remember our covenant with you. Amen.
