I Love To Tell The Story, ELW 661 & LBW 390
1 I love to tell the story of unseen things above,
of Jesus and his glory, of Jesus and his love.
I love to tell the story, because I know it’s true;
it satisfies my longings as nothing else would do.
Refrain
I love to tell the story;
I’ll sing this theme in glory
and tell the old, old story
of Jesus and his love.
2 I love to tell the story: how pleasant to repeat
what seems, each time I tell it, more wonderfully sweet!
I love to tell the story, for some have never heard
the message of salvation from God’s own holy word.
Refrain
3 I love to tell the story, for those who know it best
seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.
And when, in scenes of glory, I sing the new, new song,
how Christ, the gift from heaven, is God’s great gift of grace.
Refrain
Devotion
My mom always said I could tell an enthralling story. As a little kid, I spun stories so outrageous that my mom even got a little worried, wondering how much of my own yarns I actually believed. My imagination ran wild, and it was fun for her, my sisters, and my friends to join in on the stories and fables. Children delight in stories. I am sure many of you have fallen victim to the “read it again!” ploy. They play with trucks and dolls, creating imaginary storylines for hours on end. It is a beautiful thing.
Somehow, we miss this translation to telling The Story. Why don’t we have that same delight in telling people what God has done for us? How can we ever tire of hearing the same old, old story over and over? This hymn reminds us that there is joy to be found in the story of God’s unending love for us, both in the hearing and the telling. May we always sing this theme in glory!
Prayer
Gracious God, send us your Holy Spirit that we might have the courage to tell your story and never tire of hearing it ourselves. Amen.
