We Are Called, ELW 720
Come! Live in the light!
Shine with the joy and the love of the Lord!
We are called to be light for the kingdom,
to live in the freedom of the city of God.
We are called to act with justice,
we are called to love tenderly;
we are called to serve one another,
to walk humbly with God.
Come! Open your heart!
Show your mercy to all those in fear!
We are called to be hope for the hopeless
so hatred and blindness will be no more.
We are called to act with justice,
we are called to love tenderly;
we are called to serve one another,
to walk humbly with God.
Sing! Sing a new song!
Sing of that great day when all will be one!
God will reign, and we'll walk with each other
as sisters and brothers united in love.
We are called to act with justice,
we are called to love tenderly;
we are called to serve one another,
to walk humbly with God.
Devotion
“Come! Live in the light! Shine with the joy and the love of the Lord!,” proclaims Epiphany’s celebration of Christ, the light of the world. Haas’ hymn, We Are Called, with its lilting melody and commanding lyrics, is a profound and apt summary for the observation of Martin Luther King Day and The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Through this week’s texts, we explored how we could live out our prayers for unity by sharing resources, witnessing our Creator’s glory, loving God and our neighbors, practicing inclusivity and interdependency, working for equality and justice, seeking reconciliation and joining in mutual service. As I sing this “new song,” the stanzas powerfully call me to join all Christians to bring justice, love, service, mercy and hope to the world. Indeed, these are essential actions to build unity. We Are Called into unity with all of our neighbors!
Prayer
God of Light, guide us to do your work through actions of just, loving, mutual service that draw us into unity with all of our brothers and sisters. Amen.
