Verse 11Soon afterwards he went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went with him. Verse 12As he approached the gate of the town, a man who had died was being carried out. He was his mother's only son, and she was a widow; and with her was a large crowd from the town. Verse 13When the Lord saw her, he had compassion for her and said to her, "Do not weep." Verse 14Then he came forward and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, rise!" Verse 15The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. Verse 16Fear seized all of them; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has risen among us!" and "God has looked favorably on his people!" Verse 17This word about him spread throughout Judea and all the surrounding country.
Devotion
I am persuaded that God does not act without purpose in this world. Thus Jesus does not raise this man from Nain because he had nothing better to do. God has a bigger plan in mind. We don’t hear from this man again, and yet because of God’s work through him, word spreads about Jesus throughout Judea and the surrounding country.
Likewise, the new life that God bestows upon us is not to be squandered, but lived with joy and meaning. We Lutherans, who daily die to our old selves in baptism, are given the same command by Jesus: “I say to you, rise!” In this new life you are called to live for others and announce the good news of God’s favor upon his people. As we follow Christ’s command, we look for those who need to hear of God’s love. Because of God’s work through us, word spreads about Jesus throughout our own communities.
Prayer
Lord Christ, touch my heart and spirit this day and send me to those most in need. Amen.
