Verse 12I am grateful to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because he judged me faithful and appointed me to his service, Verse 13even though I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a man of violence. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, Verse 14and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Verse 15The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners-of whom I am the foremost. Verse 16But for that very reason I received mercy, so that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display the utmost patience, making me an example to those who would come to believe in him for eternal life. Verse 17To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
Devotion
In this lesson, Paul writes “I received mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief…” I wish I could say with Paul that I acted ignorantly in my sins. Unfortunately, all too often I do things I know are wrong. I say a harsh word to those closest to me because it feels good at that time. I speak behind other peoples’ backs and fail to explain their actions in a kind way. I act out of self-interest rather than do what is best for others. Often I know that I am wrong, but I do it anyway.
In my years as a parish pastor, I have found that many people are like me. We do not act ignorantly. We are aware of our sin. That is why we are grateful that Paul also wrote in this lesson, “The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” Knowing that Christ came to save sinners like us, we not only receive forgiveness; but can ask for forgiveness and freely forgive others when they have sinned against us. This does not excuse the sin, but it helps us to start each day anew knowing that God’s grace is with us and will help us through.
Prayer
Most gracious God, thank you for coming into the world to save sinners like us. Turn my heart from selfishness and self-centeredness. Let me instead thank you for granting your grace each and every day. In Jesus' name, Amen.
