My Life Flows On in Endless Song (ELW 763)
1 My life flows on in endless song;
above earth’s lamentation,
I catch the sweet, though far-off hymn
that hails a new creation.
Refrain
No storm can shake my inmost calm
while to that Rock I’m clinging.
Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth,
how can I keep from singing?
2 Through all the tumult and the strife,
I hear that music ringing.
It finds an echo in my soul.
How can I keep from singing? (Refrain)
3 What though my joys and comforts die?
The Lord my Savior liveth.
What though the darkness gather round?
Songs in the night he giveth. (Refrain)
4 The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart,
a fountain ever springing!
All things are mine since I am his!
How can I keep from singing? (Refrain)
Devotion
It happened! Jesus made a promise: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses” (Acts 1:8).. God kept that promise on Pentecost! God keeps that promise yet today!
Like those first followers of Jesus, we live with much uncertainty, never knowing what the next day will bring, or even if a next day will come. During our recent days and weeks during the coronavirus pandemic we have known the death of joys and comforts that we took for granted, that we thought normal. The fragility of life has become more real.
For us, for just such a time, God continues to pour out the Holy Spirit. God’s gift of the Spirit gives us three Ps—the Power of the Spirit to live this moment; the Presence of the risen, living, loving Lord Jesus; and the Peace of God that surpasses all understanding. How can we keep from singing?
Prayer
Ever-present God, you come to us when we need you most, in the midst of turmoil and strife, when joys and comforts die. You break open our hearts to give us your Power, your Presence, and your Peace. How can we keep from singing? Alleluia! Amen!
