Devotion
This week’s readings invite us to reflect on the theme of “Being taught wisdom.”
One of my favorite movie characters is Indiana Jones. In The Last Crusade he is told by the old knight to “choose wisely” when considering the cup of Jesus, the cup of life. We are challenged daily to choose wisdom over foolishness but what often gets in the way is our idea of what is wise versus foolish. In Shusaku Endo’s novel, Wonderful Fool, Gaston, one of the main characters, is considered foolish because of his loving and kind treatment of others to the point of being taken advantage of; yet he never gives up his faith in humanity. In our world being kind, generous, and caring to those who do not reciprocate or are undeserving might seem foolish. Yet Wisdom calls us to accept Wisdom’s food, which in the world’s eyes may look foolish, but through its teaching it gives us the way to live life.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, we pray for your guidance even to the point of being foolish in the eyes of a world that would call us away from sharing the love and grace we have been so freely given. Use us as instruments of loving and kind treatment of others. Amen.
