Site Information

Site keywords:Excellent preaching and liturgy; social justice; GLBT inclusion; catechumenate; education (Godly Play); multicultural congregation; community organizing.
What is your congregation or nonprofit organization all about:Jesus...we're about Jesus.
Please tell us a bit about your site:SPR is a historic congregation, the first in the ELCA to ordain a lesbian to Word and Sacrament Ministry. Since that time, SPR has been a voice for social justice, inclusion, and outreach that welcomes all into the life of the Church. We are Christocentric, and take our charism to live that out seriously.
Please tell us what a student can learn at your site:Seminarians will have opportunities to preach, teach, grow deeply in liturgical theology, as well as intentional work around social justice issues.

Mentor Information: Patrick Shebeck

Current position:Sr. Pastor
Please tell us a little bit about yourself as a Christian public leader:B.A - St. Olaf College in Liturgics and History; MDiv. Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago; DMin. Catholic Theological Union (Liturgical Theology). I have just begun as the new Sr. Pastor at SPR, and have for the past eight years mentored students in Chicago in a similar program of LSTC. Mentorship of future leaders in the Church is of the utmost importance, as well as helping those students grow more deeply into their pastoral identity.
Please tell us a little bit about yourself as a mentor of students:"Christian Public Leadership" is first a deep engagement with vocation, and then how that vocation can be fostered to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I expect high-functioning students who are ready to be challenged, further hone their skills for ministry, and who are able to articulate clearly the Lutheran Christian witness to grace and mystery. Greater learning will happen primarily through concern, helpful critique, and celebration of growth.
