We Walk by Faith and Not by Sight, WOV #675
Devotion
Thomas is not alone in wanting the kind of proof you can get with nail holes and spear thrusts. His desire to poke and prod at Jesus’ wounded, resurrected body is not all that different from the poking and prodding of those who search for traces of the historical Jesus. Seeing is believing, they say.
When Jesus did appear to Thomas, generously offering his wounds for examination, Thomas no longer had the need. He thought he had wanted proof–what he needed was presence. Christians are called to be Christ’s body in the world, bearing the presence of the crucified and risen Jesus wherever and whenever people are longing for faith.
Truth is not always subject to historic or scientific proof and what appears to be proven does not always turn out to be true. When it comes to Jesus, faith leads to sight. Believing is seeing.
Prayer
My Lord and God, help my unbelief. Bless me with your presence. Draw near. Speak your promise. Amen.
