LBW #295, “Out of the Depths I Cry to You”
Devotion
It is in God that we shall hope,
And not in our own merit.
We rest our fears in his good Word
And trust his Holy Spirit.
His promise keeps us strong and sure.
We trust the holy signature
Inscribed upon our temples.
My soul is waiting for the Lord
As one who longs for morning;
No watcher waits with greater hope
Than I for his returning.
I hope as Israel in the Lord;
He sends redemption through his Word.
We praise him for his mercy.
It is hard to imagine that the one who cries from the utter depths can watch for the Lord with such great hope.
In between despair and hope is God’s promise, which keeps coming to us in the Word. We wait and hope, rest and trust that God--who marked us with the holy signature of the cross in Baptism--will deliver on the promise.
Prayer
Out of the depths we cry to you. Father, hear our cry and come to the aid of your people. Send us your grace. Amen.
