LBW #453, "If You But Trust in God to Guide You"
Devotion
Robbed by bandits of virtually everything but his prayer book, Georg Neumark then faced a long period of unemployment. It was the mid-17th century in Germany, which was just beginning to emerge from the Thirty Years’ War. Eventually Neumark was befriended by a pastor who helped him find employment with a judge. During this time he wrote the words of this hymn. Later, a fire took all his possessions. Yet he continued to experience God’s leading in his life. Neumark continued to rise in the court system and was recognized for his literary accomplishments.
Neumark’s timeless words speak to us in whatever adversity we may face. God will not fail or forsake us.
Prayer
Dear Lord God, we were never guaranteed lives without difficulties and challenges. We do, however, have your promise always to be with us to lead us through adversity. Help us keep our eyes of faith on you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
